Year 6

Welcome to Year 6! We are thrilled to have you join us for what promises to be an exciting and enriching year. In Year 6, our primary aim is to ensure that every student feels valued and supported as they prepare for their transition to secondary school. We believe that a strong foundation in both academic and social skills is essential for success.

Academically, our curriculum is designed to challenge and engage students while fostering a love for learning. This year, we will cover a range of subjects, including mathematics, English, science, and the humanities. Our lessons will encourage critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. We aim for each student to achieve their personal best by setting high expectations and providing tailored support where needed.

Socially, we focus on the development of strong relationships. We encourage teamwork, respect, and empathy among students, creating a positive and safe learning environment. Our aim is to help students build confidence and resilience, so they are well-prepared for the future. We will also explore themes of friendship and cooperation through various activities, ensuring our classroom remains a welcoming space for all.

We strongly believe in the importance of the relationship between school and home. We will keep communication open through our messaging platform, Class Dojo, where parents can stay informed about classroom activities and their child’s progress. This partnership is vital for helping our students flourish in their learning journey.

We look forward to working together as a community to make this year a memorable and productive experience for everyone!

Curriculum Overview

Reading

We want Court Farm to be a place where children are read to, enjoy, discuss and work with high-quality books. These ‘essential reads’ would be a store of classics, creating a living library inside a child’s mind. This is the ‘Reading Spine’. We have provided the Pie Corbett reading spine in our classrooms so that children have access to these high-quality texts. Please see the attached document, to see what great books have been recommended for our year group.

Pie Corbett says…

“Great books build the imagination. The more we read aloud expressively, and the more children are able to savour, discuss and reinterpret literature through the arts, the more memorable the characters, places and events become, building an inner world. A child who is read to will have an inner kingdom of unicorns, talking spiders and a knife that cuts into other worlds. The mind is like a ‘tardis’; it may seem small but inside there are many mansions. Each great book develops the imagination and equips the reader with language.

Great stories speak to us as individuals and some children will return to certain books again and again. Great stories also build our language because around 75 per cent of our vocabulary comes from our reading. Reading develops the ability to think in the abstract; to follow lines of thought. Schools that have a reading spine, build a common bank of stories that bind the community together. These are shared and deeply imagined common experiences.”

Homework

Children are given homework on Thursdays. It is to be returned to the class teacher by the following Thursday. Homework consists of weekly spellings, which are tested in school, a Reading comprehension, an English Grammar worksheet and a maths worksheet- both will focus on a skill that has been taught that week.

PE

In Year 6, PE is taught on Monday and Wednesday.  PE days can change throughout the year due to timetable alterations. If this happens, you will be informed. PE uniform is as follows: Court Farm sports jacket, white polo shirt, black shorts, black leggings or jogging bottoms and black pumps or trainers.
