We are delighted to welcome you to our Year 5 class page, where we strive to foster a nurturing and stimulating environment for our pupils. At this pivotal stage in their education, it is essential that children remain motivated and develop a genuine desire to excel in their studies. As they prepare to transition into Year 6 and ultimately into secondary school, we place a strong emphasis on cultivating resilience, determination, and creativity within our students.
Our curriculum is designed to challenge young minds while instilling a sense of self-confidence and an appetite for learning. We believe that by encouraging our pupils to embrace their innate curiosity and tackle new challenges, they will be equipped with the skills and mindset necessary for future academic success. We look forward to working collaboratively with you to achieve the best outcomes for your children during this exciting year.
We believe that collaboration and clear communication between parents/guardians and school is paramount to your child’s enjoyment and progress. Please do not hesitate to come and speak to us either before or after school if you have any questions or queries. Alternatively, message us on ClassDojo.
Curriculum Overview

Writing

Reading
We want Court Farm to be a place where children are read to, enjoy, discuss and work with high-quality books. These ‘essential reads’ would be a store of classics, creating a living library inside a child’s mind. This is the ‘Reading Spine’. We have provided the Pie Corbett reading spine in our classrooms so that children have access to these high-quality texts. Please see the attached document, to see what great books have been recommended for our year group.
Pie Corbett says…
“Great books build the imagination. The more we read aloud expressively, and the more children are able to savour, discuss and reinterpret literature through the arts, the more memorable the characters, places and events become, building an inner world. A child who is read to will have an inner kingdom of unicorns, talking spiders and a knife that cuts into other worlds. The mind is like a ‘tardis’; it may seem small but inside there are many mansions. Each great book develops the imagination and equips the reader with language.
Great stories speak to us as individuals and some children will return to certain books again and again. Great stories also build our language because around 75 per cent of our vocabulary comes from our reading. Reading develops the ability to think in the abstract; to follow lines of thought. Schools that have a reading spine, build a common bank of stories that bind the community together. These are shared and deeply imagined common experiences.”

Maths
In maths, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning. Below is an overview of the curriculum for this academic year. Alongside this, we place a strong emphasis on mastery of number and arithmetic skills to enable children to have confidence when faced with reasoning and problem-solving questions. Each day starts with a Flashback 4, where prior learning is revisited to address misconceptions and secure understanding. Fluency sessions are taught throughout the year which consist of key arithmetic skills for the four operations.

PSHE

PE
In Year 5, PE is taught on Mondays and Tuesdays (swimming). PE days can change throughout the year due to timetable alterations. If this happens, you will be informed. PE uniform is as follows: Court Farm sports jacket, white polo shirt, black shorts, black leggings or jogging bottoms and black pumps or trainers.
Homework
Children are given homework on Thursdays. It is to be returned to the class teacher by the following Thursday. Homework consists of weekly spellings, which are tested in school, an English sheet and a maths sheet.
