Welcome to Year 2!
We are so excited to begin this important year of learning and growing together. In Year 2, children build on the skills they’ve developed in earlier years, while gaining more independence and confidence as learners. Our classroom is a place where curiosity, creativity, and teamwork are encouraged every day. Through a balance of core subjects, hands-on projects, and enriching activities, we aim to nurture each child’s strengths and help them achieve their full potential. We value the partnership between home and school, and we look forward to working closely with you to support your child’s journey this year.
Curriculum
At Court Farm children in Year 2 study a range of topics which help to deepen their understanding and develop their curiosity. Below are all the topics children will study in Year 2.

Reading
We want Court Farm to be a place where children are read to, enjoy, discuss and work with high-quality books. These ‘essential reads’ would be a store of classics, creating a living library inside a child’s mind. This is the ‘Reading Spine’. We have provided the Pie Corbett reading spine in our classrooms so that children have access to these high-quality texts. Please see the attached document, to see what great books have been recommended for our year group.
Pie Corbett says…
“Great books build the imagination. The more we read aloud expressively, and the more children can savour, discuss and reinterpret literature through the arts, the more memorable the characters, places and events become, building an inner world. A child who is read to will have an inner kingdom of unicorns, talking spiders and a knife that cuts into other worlds. The mind is like a ‘tardis’; it may seem small but inside there are many mansions. Each great book develops the imagination and equips the reader with language.
Great stories speak to us as individuals and some children will return to certain books again and again. Great stories also build our language because around 75 per cent of our vocabulary comes from our reading. Reading develops the ability to think in the abstract; to follow lines of thought. Schools that have a reading spine, build a common bank of stories that bind the community together. These are shared and deeply imagined common experiences.”
Maths
In Year 2 we continue to follow the Mastering Number programme, consolidating and building on skills the chidren have learnt in EYFS and Year 1. We also use White Rose Maths to deliver our Maths curriculum in areas such as; place value, number bonds, shape, measurement, mulitplication and division.
This half term we will be focusing on mass, capacity, volume, temperature and fractions.
Writing
At Court Farm we follow the ‘I’m a Clever Writer’ scheme for our writing lessons. We have our star write on a Friday morning which allows us to showcase all our skills from the week.

PE
PE days are Mondays and Thursdays. Children will need to wear their PE kit to school. PE kit includes black or dark coloured joggers/leggings (shorts can be worn during summer months), white polo top, dark coloured hoody or the school navy sports top
Homework & Spellings
Homework and spelling will be given out weekly. Each Friday children will receive a piece of Maths and English homework which will need to be returned the following Wednesday.
Spellings will be given to children each Friday and they will be tested the following Friday.
Book Bags
Book bags will be handed out each Friday and will need to be returned back to school on the following Wednesday.
